It is still supported in 1.3.x. It will not be supported in 1.4.x any
longer however. Because of that, there are no plans to improve support for
external files.

I'm not quite sure if we still have unit tests where this this setting is
disabled.

I guess the problem is that you need to set the system property on the JVM
where the database is open, that is, on the server. Setting it on the
client will not help.

The question is, why do you want to use this feature?
