You are right. Is that illegal ? It works with 1.4.177 server.

No, it's not illegal to use different client and server versions. When
connecting, the client and server "negotiate"  which protocol version to
use. So it looks like a bug in the client or server. Do you have a simple,
reproducible test case for this problem?
