Well, I did manage to get this working. I was using ACCESS_MODE_DATA=r to open the database in read-only mode thinking that would sooner help than hurt. Turns out the opposite is true. I removed this from the connection string and it worked.
Additionally, I did the same test on the successfully converted database (an MVStore one, that is). Same results: OOM when trying this in read-only mode and successful without that option.
