I'm glad you asked! First, let me separate the concepts of contributing 
to the community and being recognized for that contribution with the 
designation of "contributor" or "core contributor".

Taking the second point first, anyone in the community (not just current 
contributors) can propose that someone be added (or removed) as an 
official contributor or core contributor. And it's certainly not a 
requirement that someone must work for Sun to be a contributor or core 
contributor! I will be happy to nominate anyone to contributor status if 
he or she has contributed to the community, regardless of whether or not 
he or she works for Sun.

Now taking the first point, about external community members getting 
involved as contributors. There are a number of ways to do this, which 
are outlined on the contribution page: 
http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/ha-clusters/ohac/contribute/ . I 
would certainly welcome external-to-Sun folks to jump in with any of 
these activities, or to talk to me offline if you're unsure where to begin.
