sorry for the self reply, but I did some research on the depend action 
on how it is used with variants currently on an installed system.

Instead of your proposed changes, I would recommend to just change two 
lines within usr/src/ipsdefs/SUNWscxvm/depend_static like:

depend fmri=SUNWlibvirt at 0.5.11-%SOLBRANCHVER% type=require variant.arch=i386

depend fmri=SUNWxvm at 3.1-%SOLBRANCHVER% type=require variant.arch=i386


While I did not explicitly try it out, it should be enough to allow the 
package to get installed on SPARC. See my reasoning below why I would 
not restrict it to x86, although within Colrado-I none would use it on 
SPARC yet.
