No, I haven't put any of this into practice yet. I've started working on 
a conversion script, but haven't gotten very far yet.

This is correct, AFAIK.

Yes, I agree we need to be careful about this. I'm not sure what kind of 
security is available to prevent just anyone from pushing packages to a 
release repo. We'll need to look into that.

I think Thorsten suggested in a different email that it would be best to 
have no default, so that packages aren't sent anywhere unless the user 
explicitly specifies a repository. I think I agree with that approach.
