Hi Gary,

if you want to fail over RG's independent from the storage, you must have the file system available on all nodes of the cluster. This is achievable with our global mount option.

Unfortunately you can not do this with zfs, but it works perfect with ufs on top of Uolaris volume manager. In such a configuration only one RG will contain a HASP resourc, and each RG has its logical host.

So SC works perfect in such a situation, but not with zpools, as zpools do not work with the global mount option.

Gary,

You can avoid the problem you originally encountered by using multiple RGs, even if there is only one shared zpool and one shared IP resource. With multiple RGs you can have one data service fail to start (and end up offline) while the other data service goes online successfully.

My previous email gave details about the use of RG affinities.

Okay, that's unacceptable.

The only way to solve this is to give each service
its own IP and its
own zpool.

In that case, I'll have to abandon the cluster product. We have a large
number of small services to provide. The shared storage device can't
possibly provide that number of zpools. It has only two disks in a ZFS
mirror, a configuration that's more than sufficient for storage and
performance. I'm also reluctant to set up a different IP address for
each service, simply because there are so many of them.
