For either of the examples of page listing code given in your last
message, you'll need at least the support code in your theme.php that
mrc2407 gave above, or that is shown at http://pastoid.com/aqn in the
first paste. The second paste there shows the menu code, which you
already have in either of the forms in your last message.

In short, you must arrange to have something in $pages to loop
through.

This will not provide configurable ordering, *except by the page's
publication time*. It does not consider Andrew Rickmann's menu class
or other work that he mentions above, which may be more on the lines
of what you want.
