It turns out Disqus had a coding error in their instructions that I noticed
and reported. They failed to include the word example so I'd know where to
switch it out. Obvious to some I suppose but it had me stumped for a bit.

var disqus_shortname = ''; // required: replace example with your
forum shortname
Should have been var disqus_shortname = 'example'; // required: replace
example with your forum shortname
