I've solved the problem, and to be more specific it was a problem with
firefox only.
Here is what happened, since the K2 theme originally doesn't have a
div tag around this line "<?php $theme->display ('footer'); ?>" theme
would have nothing on the bottom of the page to measure it's distance
from, IE can handle this and measures the distance from the bottom of
the page but firefox can't. Since I had div's on all other sides of
the footer i could move it in all directions except away from the
bottom of the page.
I've updated my theme and now it works like intended.
