We have a flexible content-type system. This allows plugins to add their own content-types (such as photo). By default, we include entries and pages. Using the magic of FormUI, plugins can then manipulate the post publish form to create custom fields.
So far, this approach has worked pretty well. As an example, we're now working on a photoblog plugin to create a custom-tailored photoblog. However, the theme interface currently isn't as powerful as it could be. Right now, it is hard to put different post types in a single flow. I believe we intend to make this part of the 0.7 theming priority. If you look through the mailing list archives (on habari- dev), you should be able to find some discussions about how we can improve this.
