I used XAMPP Lite until version 1.7.0 came out. That version had a
great deal of trouble with PHP PDO and MySQL cooperating. There is fix
linked to from the ApacheFriends forum here -
http://www.apachefriends.org/f/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=32617, but it
didn't do me much good. I ended up downloading the normal PHP
distribution from php.net and using it instead of the php that came
with xampp lite. That made things functional, but still not stable, so
i moved to using Lighty2Go - http://www.lighty2go.com/, a portable
lightppd/php/mysql stack and MoWes Portable -
http://www.chsoftware.net/en/useware/mowes/mowes.htm, another portable
WAMP stack.
