I think attention to multi-site is slated tentatively for our 0.8 release, although that certainly doesn't mean no one will work on it before then. There was a conversation on IRC just now about an issue that may relate in some way, so that could generate some work on it in the near future.
No, no patches that I'm aware of. I don't know that anyone has even actively investigated it enough to know exactly why sub-directory multi-sites don't work yet...
