Aaaaahhh. This is going to be PHP's referencing.  The way PHP handles
referencing has changed over the years and it looks like may have
changed again in PHP 5.3.0 (I tested with 5.2.12). I've not looked
into these changes or under what circumstances objects can be passed
by reference, but the last time I checked, there wasn't a need to pass
an object by reference in PHP 5 (due to a change to the underlying
code).  Maybe PHP 5.3 has now put in some enforcement of this.

So from the way I see it, yes, your fix would be the correct one and I
think we should remove the passing by reference in this plugin.
