****************************************************************************
i would like to interview participants in social movements about how
they use mobile phones and/or other wireless tech (but not radio) for
political work. here is some text, that is *not* for publication.
Maybe you can send it out to some trustworthy friends, who i should
interview:
"A friend from Hamburg (Germany) who's doing his PhD on mobile media
and surveillance will be in Madrid from December 2nd to 5th.
His PhD is about mobile media usages and dataveillance. Mobile media
here means everything one can carry around that works wireless, from
RFID to laptops on wireless, and of course mobile phones.
He wants to do interviews with ppl who use or have used these
technologies in political work (campaigns, summits, organisation,
desinformation, ...), but as well subversive usages (such as hacking
rfid to get free public transport, etc).
The aim is twofold:
1) get to know such practices from such diverse areas as Manila and
London.
2) and then analysing them against current and to-come dataveillance.
So that in the end, very short spoken, some guide or help for the
usage of such technologies for activists and social movemenents can be
written by him that reports the advantages and disadvantages of each
practice he researched in the light (or shadow?) of its potential and
actual measure of surveillance.
The aim, so to say, is to update on what the other side is doing
(while he is not reducing on state authorities, but as well on
commercial players) and discuss what media usages are more hit by them
and which are not so much hit or not at all.
He is critically aware of the ambiguity of such a project and
generally dont think that it is so wise to shed too much light on
social movements and political actions for academic research as most
of the times the research ends in some library that is much more used
by the other side than by us. So, he is not doing social research on
the actors and groups, but reduce it to the mobile media aspect.
Anoymity, if wanted, is granted and, if wanted, he can send the
transcribed interviews to the interviewed before using it.
He write this PhD in english and will distribute it cc'ed (or so) to
all the ppl interviewed plus all that are interested from our side."
i hope this is enough info.
Regarding Ricardo: i actually dont know yet why he is in Madrid. I
will ask him and find out...
So, looking forward seeing you on the 2nd!
best, oli
