Strange but interesting because on my test system (WAMP) which also use 4.2
version of Drupal and 1.51 version of image.module, I have the same
temporary looking filenames in image dir, but eveything works fine. No error
message. I can access the images and use image filter in a story.

Do you have the exact error message? That may help.
