Glad to be on board!

Just an fyi to the list, our hosting rig is pure FreeBSD 4.8, we use jails to separate clients. (A jail is like a whole chrooted machine with a single bound IP address.) For our clients that have just got some simple php pages or our probono clients we throw them all into the same jail, since they don't really need the security. All of our other clients have their own jails. Our general jail is a straightforward php/apache affair, but we've got other jails that are a bit more customized. We've got a mod_perl jail, for instance, which is where we host commoncontent.org. Jails can have their own mysql servers, but we tend to throw everything into a single mysql instance on the root of the server, since that way we can take more advantage of ram.

I'm not really a linux guy, so if hosting turns in that direction my input may be limited to apache configurations and whatnot, but I'll be glad to give whatever help I can.

Jon and Jeff ...

That is truly great news! Thank you ...

Jeff and I were just talking. He has the real network expertise in our
organization, so I wanted to make sure he was on board before we offered
to
do anything. Our company, Polycot Consulting, does selective hosting -
it's
not our main gig but Jeff is proficient. As I said, we might be willing to
do manageable stuff pro bono, like host primary sites but not a number of
nodes. Otherwise we can offer expertise, help figure out the tech and the
costs if you want to take it elsewhere. The main thing is that we want to
support the effort and we have a clue... which is to say we might be able
to
contribute to sustainability in the fall and thereafter.
