Turned out to be basically the same as rtl-sdr:

in hackrf source tree:

cd host/libhackrf
mkdir build
cd build
cmake .. -DCMAKE_OSX_ARCHITECTURES=i386 -DINSTALL_UDEV_RULES=ON
make

This puts 32 bit library files in: src/ subfolder of build
