I've updated the instructions to point out that startx is not required to perform firmware updates: https://github.com/mossmann/hackrf/wiki/Getting-Started-with-HackRF-and-GNU-Radio You also don't need networking as long as you have a local copy of the firmware and CPLD binaries. On the latest Pentoo image (RC3.5), these can be found in /usr/share/hackrf/.
