I'll have to contact Nooelec again - here is part of an earlier thread
with them.
No problem, it's the least we could do :-/

Very sorry to hear you are still waiting Norm :( As we mentioned
earlier, since we only did the shipping for the Kickstarter orders
there is little we can do to assist. However, we will try to
ensure your message to the manufacturer gets answered soon.
Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Mike,
I'm sure you are very busy, but I would appreciate a
response. One of my HackRF's is defective, how can I get it
replaced? Can you send me a new one and have me send back the
one that's having issues? It's been over two months now, and
I would like to get this resolved.
Thanks!
Norm

Mike,
I sent you a message a while ago about issues with one of my
HackRF units. I think NooElec also sent a message a week or
so later. Maybe one of the switches on the front-end is not
working properly. How do I go about doing an RMA for the unit
that's not working correctly?
Thanks, Norm.

Mike,
I've been enjoying scanning around with my new HackRF, and it seems like
there is a problem with it. Just for fun I was comparing some signals
between it and my Terratec dongle. The dongle seemed to be more
sensitive and produced fewer spurious spikes. I tried playing with the
LNA gain, VGA gain, and Amp. That helped some, but I noticed whenever I
turned on the Amp, it seemed to kill the signal. I have a second HackRF
I purchased as an add-on, and it has much better sensitivity and the Amp
does seem to change the levels and not kill the signal. Is there
anything I can adjust, or does it sound like I have a bad unit?
Thanks, Norm

I shipped it back to Risc Corp who is one of the official
resellers. They didn't have any in stock left as that was the last
unit but they didn't give me a hard time and simply refunded the
original amount.

Who did you ship it back to? At this point I would like to ship
back my
defective unit for a refund as well.

I shipped mine back, was DOA, at least got a refund but probably
won't get my customs fee back and paid for the return shipping.
I
tried to contact Michael before i shipped it back but got only
<crickets> back.
Kind of disappointed with this, so i'm most likely going to save
a
budget for the USRP B200 or B210. But this time i'll check
reviews
and any issues first before throwing again money.
Anyway, thanks to the good people on this list who provided
advise
/ troubleshooting tips, appreciated !

Thanks Doug for the informations,
I was waiting for a unit but I removed the order yesterday in
favour of a
hermes-lite, that is closer to my needs.
Now, after your quick review, I'm happy for my new choice.

Several people have complained with HackRF problems, worrying

their
unit is defective.
I have the same worries. Mine clearly is nowhere near as good
as
the DVB dongles. But it clearly works, no quibble. It works
both in
SDR#/Windows and Gnuradio/GRC/Ubuntu.
But it is plagued by spurious spikes of near-CW stuff
everywhere, even
up in the upper GHz areas where there should be essentially
nothing.
It sees Wi-Fi fine ... but covered by these spurious carriers.
And
many of them are DIFFERENT in SDR# and Gnuradio. And using
both
they are dependant, both in amplitude and frequency, on the
gain settings at the low gain end as well as the high gain
end.
That dependance at the low gain end implies to me that its is
incorrectly dithered or some software problem.
I bought it for the wide bandwidth for certain special
purposes
and it serves those purposes OK even in the presence of the
garbage.
But for general use, its a plain, and expensive, joke.
