The first thing it does when the DFU download finishes is to run the
code that was transferred, so it sounds like it's hitting the same
problem as it does with the firmware in flash.

Could you try another firmware for me?  We have a very basic firmware,
called blikny.dfu that should just blink the LEDs (it won't do
anything over USB).  I've built a copy and uploaded it here:
https://dominicspill.com/blinky.dfu

If this works it will tell us that the DFU process is working, but the
problem is in running the regular HackRF firmware.
