Are you actually entering DFU mode ? Hold down the HackRF's DFU button (the button closest to the antenna jack) and plug the HackRF into a USB port on your computer. After the HackRF is plugged in, you may release the DFU button.
DFU mode is stored in a ROM within the CPU, created by NXP the manufacturer, of the LPC4320. DFU mode not working, would be unusual. In DFU mode you should see a green LED (and a dimly lit red and orange LED) and running "lsusb" on the Linux command line should show a device "ID 1fc9:000c NXP Semiconductors" connected to some USB port.
