Julie pointed out that I was using the wrong hackystat host for testing. I was using "http://hackystat.ics.hawaii.edu"; as the hackystat host. I have changed it to ServerProperties.getInstance().getHackystatHost() to avoid the hardcoding of the hackystat host.
