provide progress feedback while the reducer is sorting

during the sort phase of reduce, the progress is stuck at 33%, like:
tip_0132_r_000000 0.33333334 reduce > sort
For some jobs this takes a long time, during which it's not clear if the job is
making any progress.
Some progress indication would be good.
