I think skip() can still be implemented by genericChecker(). It can either use 
read() or small variation of read(). An implementation can choose to use 
generic skip() selectively. For. e.g. in the case of DFS it will use generic 
skip if skip is small (< 128KB) and falls with in the same block, other wise 
does 'seek(curPos() + skipLen)'.
