Hi,
We have completed a preliminary version of the extra CD that will be
installed on users' PCs during the party. The version we currently have is
by no means complete and is missing several key parts (see below). We would
like any users on this list with non-production RH9 systems, preferablly
newly installed to try to install this CD (see instructions below). The
image is available at http://www.haifux.org/newcomers/HaifuxUpdates-test2.iso
The MD5 sum of the ISO is: 950b6f177c5f48119ed44e6b227b2279
The image contains:
- Distribution updates ("updates" directory).
- Wide range of additional packages ("additions" directory).
- Binary drivers for nVidia.
- OpenOffice install dir
- Boot image with ntfsresize and parted.
- KickStart file (see below).
Things still missing (but will be added):
- Install script for the CD (compatible with RedHat autostart).
- Lecture slides for HAIFUX newcomers lectures
- apt-get RPM will be installed. Enables easy package installation.
- (maybe?) Windows autostart with AIDA or other system info util.
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
- -------------------------
If you want to install a fresh system with our package selection, do the
following:
1. Burn the CD from the ISO.
2. Copy the "ks.cfg" file to an FAT formatted floppy.
3. Boot from the updates CD and free (unpartitionized) space for the
installation.
4. Boot RedHat CD1 and type "linux ks=floppy" in the boot prompt.
5. Allocate partitions and step through the installation.
6. When prompted for additional CDs, select you don't have any!
7. Continue from step 2 of the instructions for already-installed systems
below.
If you have already installed RH9.0 on your system, do the following:
1. Burn the CD from the ISO.
2. mount the CD if needed.
3. Install the updates: "rpm -Fvh updates/all/* updates/<ARCH>/*" where
<ARCH> is your system architecture (such as "i686" or "athlon").
4. Install the additions: "rpm -Uvh Additions/all/* Additions/<ARCH>/*"
(<ARCH> should be replaced as before).
5. Optionally, install OpenOffice and nVidia drivers.
6. Test the updated system, and send us feedback.

I don't mind arguing with myself. It's when I lose that it bothers me.
