Never tried these tools, but converting png to eps with the
gimp resulted in insanely large files, which is why I opted
for PDFLaTeX.

Also, IIRC, when you use the same image more than once dvips
will copy the same eps file again and again into the PostScript
output whereas PDFLaTeX only puts one copy of a png/jpg image.
This becomes significant when you have 40 penguins running
around your brochure...
