Summary of the meeting, for all those who were not there but wanted to, were not there but may be interested, were there but did not write it down. Some points are missing/ lacking, I will be glad if anybody could fill out the gaps.
Warning: During most of the meeting Ezion discussed Windows problems. ------------------------------- An extended partition must be the last partition, for Windows to be safe (though the standard does not specify it, and Linux supports the standard). Partitions in yound Windows systems (not 95, 98) must be changed/ deleated from within the Windows: my computer-> manage. The logical partitions are outlined in green. In late Windows systems there is a new standard for partitioning, called dynamic partitions (as opposed to basic partitions). One can easily switch from basic to dynamic, but not vice versa: the switch from dynamic to basic includes deleting all contents. In the dynamic method, which is unique to Windows, the info is kept in the end of the HD (in an 8M file). We cannot share, of course, a disk which is partitioned "dynamically" between Windows and Linux. Adir and Ezion will be in charge of doing things with pqmagic. Windows 98 cannot stand too many partitions, even if they are not mounted in the Windows. Its limit is about 5. It is possible to unite partitions, but this process takes too long (several hours). We will do this only given time and vacant stands. In Windows 95 it is impossible to unite partitions over 2G each. Mandrake 9.2 is known to have ruined LG cdroms while installing (a combination of a firmware bug with a bug originating from Suse). Connecting to cables: http://www.iarc.org/~ezaton/cables.siframes.html We will upgrade (by accelerating) graphic cards by nvidia and ati. (How? I missed this part) On using the NFS for updates: --------------------------- make sure the following are running (?? I think I missed a point here): portmap nfslock make sure the iptables is off. mkdir /mnt/temp mount instaparty:/RH9/mnt/temp cd /mnt/temp/RH9/updates ./install The install must be run from within the updates library. Remeber to umount in the end. Remember not to mount on /tmp. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Haifa Linux Club Mailing List (http://www.haifux.org) To unsub send an empty message to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
