Well, of course there is the simple, although a bit raw method - you install 
the new packages, using --force or --nodeps, you check to see what's broken, 
and if it's beyond your ability to replair, you downgrade back to your 
original version.
Keep besides you the following:
Rescue CD (MDK9 CDs can be used as rescue CDs)
the original RPM package
20 minutes - 1.5 hours, depends on the severity of the demage.

As easy as this.
