If I were in your shoes I would limit myself to the distributions that I am using. In my case, it is only one. I would also start with the desktop the I am using. In my case this is the shell because I am not using KDE or Gnome. In fact I also use only one version of my distribution. Is it obvious that I use one version of the kernel? What about the firewall? Have I forgot some other factors? That is getting way too limited. May be this is one more reason why I am not a Linux support man. However I do feel that one person should not try to support Linux in general. Rather, he should put limits on what he is willing to try and handle. I do believe that management expects its help desk to make the user happy within one call. Perhaps you should suggest to the users that are asking about things that you are not familiar with the various help forums; with the addition that you too will escort their help requests until their problem gets resolved. You might also tell the user that it will be you who actually ask the forum. Although some users of yours might prefer it I do believe that asking by themselves and let you know where they post their request is a better way to help them. -- "If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange apples then you and I will still each have one apple.
