To Computer Science Faculty ,
Sun Microsystems is planning to opensource Solaris operating system early of this year. Sun Microsystems is in the Opensolaris pilot phase. I am working with Opensolaris community manager to promote Opensolaris. Sun wants reputed educational institutions all over the world to actively participate in Opensolaris. We would like Technion - Israel Institute of Technology to play a major role in Opensolaris.
Benefits of joining Opensolaris pilot phase: -----------------------------------------
* Student executing projects using Opensolaris code
* Writing white papers on Solaris
* Staff can create curricula around opensolaris
* Opensolaris will run on x86 and Sparc platform. Educational institutions can use existing x86 platforms to run opensolaris.
* Staff/Students can directly talk to Sun Solaris kernel engineers
* Can publish University developed Solaris source code after opensolaris launch
General criteria to come in to the OpenSolaris Pilot Program: -------------------------------------------------------------
* They have to sign the OpenSolaris Pilot Agreement
* They can *talk about being in* the Pilot Program, but content, code, and conversations are private
* Pilot Agreement to expire when we launch and have an OSI license
* Launch date and logistics are TBD
* License is TBD (but will be OSI)
* We're looking for early feedback and direct engagement with Solaris kernel engineers. In feedback phase, help opensolaris community build web site, provide content, contribute in embedded solaris OS, influence creation of community etc.
* The Pilot Program will last for several months
* We currently have kernel source in a browsable CVS repository
* Key solaris 10 kernel innovations(dtrace, zfs,fireengine , zones, crypto framework etc) are there with more on the way
* Kernel source will be buildable within the Pilot Program and before launch
* Compilers are free
* We have several dozen drivers (and more on the way) that are fully buildable cross platform
* We have documentation
* We have mail lists with blogs coming soon
Please update your interest ASAP.
