Next Monday (14/3/2005), 18:30, the Haifa Linux Club will once
again meet to hear Ido Barnea talk about:
A look at other open source operating systems.
An introduction to *BSD".
Abstract
Besides Linux, other unix open source operating systems exist. The most
popular one being FreeBSD, and others are NetBSD, OpenBSD and Apple's
Darwin. The lecture consists of two parts. During the first hour we will
look shortly at the different goals each of these systems is trying to
achieve, and try to understand why each of them exists. Then we will focus
on FreeBSD, explore its basic components, its main features, and the
people behind it. The second part will be a very basic introduction to the
FreeBSD networking stack. We will see the mbuf, which is the main data
structure used by FreeBSD for packet handling, and look at how it handles
incoming and outgoing packets. The second part can serve as a general
basic introduction for unix kernels networking, and will (I hope) be of
interest not only to people planning to work in the FreeBSD kernel (which
I guess are not that many). If by any chance, someone is interested in a
more in depth understanding of the FreeBSD kernel, I will be happy to
help.
