You might want to asdd a mention of Sticky Keys: the ability to hit Shift _then_ a letter instead of having to hold shift. This ability has sped up my typing speed considerably. It is not unique to Linux, but it is better implemented in KDE (I don't know about Gnome) than in MS Windows.
