Just out of curiosity, how does DNS prevent a message from going through?

The server I use for outbound SMTP used to be the slave for several Hamakor domains. The new admins failed to notify me that that is no longer the case. As a result, it contained old A and MX records for haifux.org, resulting in trying to send all of my emails to the wrong machine (receiving "connection refused", and queuing them for a while).
