It's breaking because Haml deals with Ruby blocks automatically, in the 
same way it deals with nested HTML elements. So, to do your loop, you'd do:

  - for user in @users 
    - @user = user
    %td={ in_place_editor_field :user, :l_name }

No "end" necessary. I hope that suits your purposes :).
