Finally got around to this (sorry for the delay :p). It's been fixed in 
trunk... I don't think I'm going to do it for stable, though. If you 
want the behavior, though, don't worry - trunk is perfectly okay to use. 
The "~" character is deprecated there, though, so use the :preserve 
filter instead.
