I tried this:

!code_background= #211d20
!code_border= #312d30

pre
   :padding 4px
   :background= !code_background
   :border= 1px solid !code_border
   code
     :background transparent

And the stylesheet generated shows:

/*
NoMethodError: undefined method `solid' for #<Sass::Constant::String: 
0x3511334 @value="1px">
...<snip>...

Moving !code_border to be the first variable token on the line  
doesn't help.

Thoughts?
