Huh, my mistake. But the point still remains that it's a special case, even if it /is/ used in every textarea ever created. It's certainly not used every time someone uses "=", and it's not the expected behavior. Yes, Haml mucking up the whitespace is a problem, but that's why there's a solution for when that problem comes up.
