Here's my solution for same problem:
%script{:language=>"JavaScript",:src=>"/script.js"}=""
Ie, If you put the ="" at the end then it will not add the extra line break.
I use the same thing for css, eg:
%link{:rel=>"stylesheet",:type=>"text/css",:href=>"/styles.css"}=""
But it's not very pretty. I'm like you -- I couldn't bear those extra line
breaks in the output.
