I've not uploaded Haml to the server - it was already installed on the
server, and I just followed the documentation instructions to install
the plugin from the local gem:

    haml --rails /path/to/app/

The hosting is a shared hosting account, so I'm not able to restart
the server itself. I have, however, tried performing a killall on the
FastCGI processes my account was running.

Sadly, no success.
