I don't have any ideological objections to you doing this. As far as I'm concerned, you can do whatever you want with the Haml code as long as you include the copyright notice somewhere reasonable. It should be reasonably possible to get a pared-down Haml implementation by removing files. You'd be responsible for keeping that up-to-date with future Haml organizational changes, though, of course.
