This is a bug. It should be generating "= succeed", which would work. I've
just pushed a fix that'll get released as part of 3.0.7 soon.

The reason it generates a call to #succeed at all is that in order for the
Haml to match the HTML, there needs to be no whitespace between the tag and
the period following it. Succeed is the only way to reliably do this.
