For better or worse, Ruby is a requirement for HAML. There are, I believe, libraries for other languages that are modelled on/very similar to HAML if a different language would serve you better. The only one I'm at all familiar with is Jade (https://github.com/visionmedia/jade), which is for JavaScript.
