Is there an application running which has grabbed the sound device?
I sometimes find there's an nspluginwrapper half running that needs
killing.

If you run alsa, you should be able to restart it with:
        /etc/init.d/alsasound restart

At least, that works on Gentoo.

My computer went down in a power cut on Thursday, and I've spent most
of today rebuilding kernels and sound drivers trying to get sound
working again after the reboot. Finally tracked it down to needing to
switch the speakers back on... (so take any advice I can give about
sound with a pinch of salt!).
