You probably want to fully uninstall the existing drivers before installing the new ones. You may also want to run fglrxconfig (or whatever it's called) to autogenerate an xorg.conf file (you shouldn't need to, but if it's not working...)
Can you: $ sudo modprobe fglrx ? Running $ glxinfo | grep dir should give you direct rendering: yes if the driver is installed properly. If you like, you can send me your /var/log/Xorg.* log files and your /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if it exists) and I'll try and give you a hand diagnosing the issue. Cheers, Benjie.
