I wouldn't... > How fast a network do I need to make this work sensible? Is gigabit > network enough? That depends somewhat on your definition of "sensible". 1Gb/s Ethernet has approximately the same raw data rate as ATA-133. But you won't get that raw rate over ethernet as there are many overheads to consider, even if your NICs and switches can cope with 100% fill (most cannot). So the best possible performance you can hope for will be less than an ATA-133 disk, significantly less than a SATA2 disk. And in practice, you should expect it to be much slower than the best possible theoretical performance. This also ignores any other network traffic you might want to put near that link... > Photo processing is quite data intensive, especially when batching > conversion on my 6 core desktop, currently I think the disk I/O is my > limit to go faster. Then you really shouldn't even think about going diskless. It will run like a pig.
