There are simple tools that you just plug into a port, it will then light up to tell you the other end is connected to a switch for example (if it is patched it) because the link will come up, like the following: http://www.amazon.com/Smartronix-Linkcheck-Ethernet-Tester/dp/B000RGI6R6 I used to use a better one than that though but I can't remember what it is called nor find it via sporadic googling. ....
