FWIW, I stopped using the main distribution of Ubuntu ages ago, because I dislike their desktop, in favour of xubuntu, which uses a more traditional desktop.
For quite a while I installed ubuntu, then jumped through the hoops to get to a "traditional" desktop, before realising that xubuntu (XFCE desktop) did it all for me.
If you do really want KDE, kubuntu may be a better starting point. I haven't tried it, so can't comment other than that.
