Hi everybody, I've done my own test about the load cycle count problem on some laptop.
Here is the results: Toshiba A35-S159 with HDD Hitachi 80Gb 7200rpm On battery mode, check every 10 minutes: 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1557 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1605 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1658 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1735 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1790 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1845 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1907 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 1980 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 2048 AC mode, check every 10 minutes: 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 2097 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 2120 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 2180 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 2230 As you can see, the load cycle count increase a lot on both battery and AC mode. I didn't do a lot of check on AC mode because on the 4 1st checks, there was no significant difference between battery and AC mode. By checking this link: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/59695 I've used the solution proposed by TDB: TDB wrote on 2007-10-06: (permalink) Here is how I permanently fixed it: 1) make a file named "99-hdd-spin-fix.sh". The important thing is starting with "99". 2) make sure the file contains the following 2 lines (fix it if you have PATA HDD): #!/bin/sh hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda 3) copy this file to 3 locations: /etc/acpi/suspend.d/ /etc/acpi/resume.d/ /etc/acpi/start.d/ Voila! After that the HDD never spins down on power (looks like it actually spins down on battery at modest rate). Sorry if the instruction is too detailed, no offense. Here is the result on battery mode after the fix: 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 2357 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 2357 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 2357 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 2357 193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 2357 Hope it can help!
