At AuF in Asia-Pacific area (which is what I manage), we do like this:
- servers are backuped using BackupPC :
  - 1 full backup once e week, for 52 weeks ;
  - 1 incremental backup everyday, for 6 days ;
- notebook will be saved using BackupPC too (unfinished work) ;
- BackupPC data will be mirrored (using rsync) on external USB disk once
a week (unfinished work) ;
- no data on desktop, everything in shares on the servers ;
- should people want to have data on their desktop, they would be
responsible for their backup, doing it themself.

Before using BackupPC, I was using rsync too. But using a basic rsync,
you don't get history and any removed file will be lost as soon as the
next rsync ; the same for any change in a file. And since rsync is not
compressing data, you need to get as much space as the real data.
BackupPC also use file hashes to compare every files and save duplicates
only once, which rsync is not able to do. Note that BackupPC *is* using
the rsync protocol over SSH (and can use tar/ssh or even samba to backup
Windows desktop if any).
